Stanton is small in a way that changes the entire calculation. Roughly 2,650 people live inside about two square miles, and the town serves as county seat for Martin County — 911 square miles of red sandy loam that grew cotton long before it produced a barrel of oil. The Texas and Pacific Railway platted it as Grelton in 1881; German Catholic settlers renamed it Marienfeld four years later and raised the first Catholic church in West Texas.
