The Junk Removal Questions Midland Residents Ask Most, Answered

October 23, 2026

Six questions Midland residents commonly search about getting rid of junk, answered from City of Midland and Texas rules, with the free routes listed before anything that costs money.

What Will a Junk Removal Crew Refuse?

Start with where the load ends up. Everything a hauler carries away goes to a landfill, a recycler or a donation door, so the landfill's rules set the hard limits. TCEQ's guidance on what municipal landfills may accept, revised in February 2026, lists lead-acid storage batteries, used oil, used oil filters (with narrow exceptions) and regulated hazardous waste as prohibited at every type of municipal solid waste landfill in Texas. Liquid wastes have to be tested and shown to hold no free liquids before a landfill that accepts them will take them.

Household chemicals sit in a gray zone. The state's household hazardous waste guidance says leftover products from a home are not required to be handled as hazardous waste and can often go in regular trash, though many residents choose a collection program instead. A hauler can still decline them, so mention every can and jug when asking for a quote. These are the items worth naming up front:

  • Car, truck and mower batteries
  • Motor oil, used oil filters and drums that still hold liquid
  • Partly full cans of fuel, solvent, pool chemicals or pesticide
  • Tires, which the City's trash service and its drop-off sites both refuse

What Is the Least Expensive Way to Get Rid of Junk?

In Midland, the least expensive route is usually the City's own. For residential customers, the Solid Waste Division hauls away furniture and appliances without an extra charge, and its own list mixes the light with the heavy: couches, chairs, bed frames and patio furniture, but also freezers, refrigerators, water heaters, washers, dryers, A/C units, grills and even swing sets.

Residents who can carry their own load have two drop-off sites: the Smith Road station north of the ClayDesta post office and the west-side center on Highway 80. Both run 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday plus 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, and both take household furniture, mattresses, white goods, brush and recyclables, from cardboard, paper and aluminum to No. 1 and No. 2 plastics, according to the City's recycling and drop-off rules. Leftover paint has a simple route as well: brush or pour it onto cardboard or scrap lumber, and once it has dried it can go out with the alley trash.

How Do You Book the City's Large-Item Pickup?

Call the Solid Waste Division, or file a request through SeeClickFix, the City's service-request app and website, which lists large item pick-up among the sanitation issues it handles. The app is monitored during regular City Hall business hours, so a request sent on a weekend or a holiday may sit until the next business day.

The rules matter more than the booking. The item has to be set out back in the alley, on public right-of-way behind the house and well away from the dumpster. City crews will not step onto private property, and the queue runs in the order the calls arrived. That makes the free pickup a good fit for one heavy item and a poor fit for a deadline. The fine print is in this breakdown of the free furniture pickup.

Can You Haul Junk to the Landfill Yourself?

Yes. The City's landfill on East Garden City Highway takes loads from the public on weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and it accepts card, cash and check. A pickup without a Garbage Hauler's Permit decal pays an access fee on top of the normal landfill charges, which is one reason a single full trip beats several half-empty ones.

Weigh the trip before committing to it. A trailer has to be loaded, tied down, driven out Garden City Highway and emptied, and the gate closes two hours earlier on Saturday than on weekdays. This guide to the City of Midland Landfill walks through the visit itself in more detail.

What Happens to Junk After a Hauler Takes It?

Inside the city, a vehicle that hauls garbage and unloads at the City landfill needs a Garbage Hauler's Permit. The City issues it per vehicle for the calendar year, January 1 through December 31, after an application with proof of insurance, and the vehicle is subject to inspection. Approved trucks display a permit decal, so asking about it is a quick way to learn how a hauler plans to dispose of a load.

The public drop-off sites are not an option for that truck: the City refuses loads brought by anyone being paid to haul them, and the sites accept no commercial waste of any kind. What still has use can go to donation, metal and recyclables to recyclers, and the rest to the landfill. A careful hauler sorts before the truck leaves the driveway, not after.

When Is Paying a Hauler Worth It?

The free routes are built around a resident doing the moving. The alley pickup stops at the property line, and the drop-off sites take only single-axle trailer loads from residents clearing their own homes, with landscapers and contractors turned away. Tires, dirt, rock, concrete, fencing, other building material and anything hazardous are refused outright.

Paying for help makes sense when those limits bite: furniture that has to come out of a back bedroom or down a staircase, a garage or a whole house to empty, a closing or move-out date, a rental unit, a business, or an address outside the city. That is the work a Midland hauler that does the carrying is set up for, from getting a sofa or a dead washer out of the house to emptying a garage or an estate in one visit. The pricing guide explains what moves a quote up or down.

Quick Answers

What day is garbage pickup in Midland, Texas?

Residential garbage in Midland is collected twice a week, on either a Monday and Thursday or a Tuesday and Friday schedule, depending on the route. Some customers have an individual curbside cart, while alley routes share one container among four to five residents. Bulky items do not go out with regular collection; they need a separate large-item request.

Does Midland trash pickup run on holidays?

Holiday weeks shift the schedule, and the City posts holiday changes on its trash service page. Over Labor Day 2026, solid waste collection was closed on Monday, September 7, Monday routes were picked up on Tuesday, and Tuesday routes moved to Wednesday. The landfill and the Citizens Collection Station also closed that Monday, and the station lists itself as closed on holidays.

Can household chemicals go in the regular trash in Texas?

Often, yes. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality says hazardous products generated by a household are not required to be managed as hazardous waste and can often go in regular trash, though many residents prefer a collection program. Keep products in their original labeled containers and never mix them. Midland's trash service separately excludes vehicle batteries and barrels of oil, and paint should be dried out first.
