Moving a Piano, Safe, or Pool Table Out of a Midland Home

September 28, 2026

The City of Midland will haul a refrigerator away at no charge. The heaviest single object in your house is not on that list — and every free route ends at the alley.

The Free Pickup Ends at the Alley

For residential customers, the City of Midland picks up furniture and appliances at no additional charge. You call 432-685-7278, the collection is scheduled by date of call, and nothing appears on your bill. The City's published examples are couches, chairs, bed frames and “most household furniture,” plus refrigerators, freezers, washers and dryers, water heaters, A/C units, BBQ grills, swing sets and patio furniture.

A piano, a gun safe and a slate pool table appear on none of those lines. The list reads as examples rather than a closed roster, so ask rather than assume — there is more on how the program works in the guide to the City's free furniture and appliance pickup.

The condition attached to the program is what actually decides the job. Items must be placed in the alley in the city right-of-way, not beside the dumpster, and the City states plainly that it will not go onto private property. Whatever the answer about your particular item, the carry from the den to the alley belongs to you.

What These Things Actually Weigh

The carry is the entire problem, and the numbers are worse than people picture. These are published manufacturer specifications, not estimates:

  • Yamaha U1 upright piano: 502 lbs. The taller U3: 517 lbs.
  • Steinway Model B grand: 802 lbs, and 6 ft 11 in long before you account for the legs and lyre.
  • Liberty Presidential gun safes: 1,021 lbs, 1,333 lbs and 1,585 lbs across the three sizes.

A Pool Table Is Not One Object

A pool table does not move until it stops being a pool table. The cloth comes off, the rails unbolt, and the playing surface underneath is a bed of quarried slate in multiple pieces — each one heavy enough to need two people and rigid enough to crack if it flexes on a stair.

That matters for disposal as much as for lifting, because slate is stone. The two citizen stations publish a Not Accepted list, and concrete and rock both sit on it. Before you load a slate bed onto a trailer and drive across town, confirm at 432-685-7278 that the gate will take it.

The Citizens Stations Have a Trailer Limit and a Paid-Hauler Rule

The Citizens Collection Station at 4100 Smith Road and the Citizens Convenience Center at 6400 W. Highway 80 accept bulky items — household furniture, mattresses, white goods — free, Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Two published rules narrow that door considerably:

  • Only single-axle trailer loads are accepted, and loads must be secure.
  • The stations are for the exclusive use of City of Midland residents hauling from their own single-family residential homes.
  • Anyone receiving payment to haul items from a residential site will not be accepted. Residents only — no landscapers or contractors.

The Landfill Charges You Again for Every Trip

That last rule is the one people trip over. Paying a neighbor with a trailer to run your safe out to Smith Road does not work, because the station turns away anyone being paid to haul from a residential address.

The paid route generally ends at the City of Midland Landfill at 7901 E. Garden City Highway, open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., taking card, cash and check. Vehicles without a valid Garbage Hauler's Permit are charged a $25 Landfill Access Fee in addition to regular landfill charges. The permit itself runs $500 per year for each vehicle, which only makes sense for someone hauling for a living, so a homeowner pays the access fee on every single trip.

One heavy item is usually one trip, which makes the landfill run look cheap. It stops looking cheap when the safe will not fit through the door and one trip becomes two, or when the weekday gate closes at 4 p.m. and your only free afternoon was a Tuesday. That per-trip arithmetic is part of what a junk removal job costs in Midland.

The Bill Nobody Budgets Is the Damage

Heavy singles do not fail gently. A five-hundred-pound upright that gets away from four people takes a doorframe, a threshold or a run of tile with it, and a safe dropped on a garage slab can crack the slab. Stair treads, interior corners and the lip at the front door are the usual casualties — and none of that is covered by the free City programs you were trying to use.

Be honest with yourself about the inventory. With four able adults, a rated appliance dolly, stair-climbing straps, a ramp and a truck, the free routes cost you fees and a Saturday and nothing else. With two people improvising, the drywall repair alone can outrun the price of heavy-item removal in Midland — and the injury risk is the part that does not show up on any invoice.

Where paid hauling structurally earns its keep is the carry, not the disposal. A crew brings the equipment, takes the item apart where it stands, and walks it out from inside the property rather than meeting you at the right-of-way. Single heavy items usually price as furniture and appliance removal, and when the piano is one line on a much longer list, it folds into a property cleanout instead.

Quick Answers

Will the City of Midland pick up a piano for free?

The City's published examples for its free residential furniture and appliance pickup name most household furniture plus specific appliances, and a piano is not among them — so call Solid Waste at 432-685-7278 and ask before you plan around it. Either way the item has to be sitting in the alley in the city right-of-way, because the City will not go onto private property to get it.

Can I haul a pool table to the Citizens Collection Station myself?

Bulky household furniture is on the accepted list, but three published rules apply: only single-axle trailer loads, only City residents hauling from their own single-family home, and no one who is being paid to haul from a residential site. The slate is the open question, since the station's Not Accepted list names concrete and rock — confirm at 432-685-7278 first.

What does it cost to take a gun safe to the Midland landfill?

Regular landfill charges, plus a $25 Landfill Access Fee if your vehicle does not carry a valid Garbage Hauler's Permit. The permit is $500 per year per vehicle, so most homeowners simply pay the access fee. The gate at 7901 E. Garden City Highway is open weekdays 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., and takes card, cash or check.
